HEALTHY, REWARDING OUTDOOR WORK

Are you an energetic person looking for stimulating, productive outdoor work? Spurgeon Veggies provides a healthy work environment where all our crew members can think creatively, problem-solve, exercise their bodies, and head home feeling accomplished and productive. We are a very small, close-knit group that works together as a team every day to achieve big goals, like harvesting two thousand pounds of tomatoes by hand or setting up a beautiful display of our produce at markets and our farm stand week after week. Everyone on our crew has access to the highest quality produce around (it's a perk!), fair pay, and a respectful group of co-workers. To see what we're all about, we encourage you to peruse our website. If you'd like to apply for any position(s), please send your letter of interest and a resume to Dusty: dusty@spurgeonveggies.com.

Field Crew Member

*Closed for 2020*

TO APPLY:
Contact Dusty with a letter of interest and your resume at dusty@spurgeonveggies.com.

  • Schedule: 20-25 hours/week, Tuesday-Friday. Work begins around 6 am (will vary with the season) and goes until early to mid afternoon depending on the needs of the day. Expect to work 2-4 days per week. Positions begin early to late May and last through the end of October. Field crew member applicants may also be considered for farmers' market work on Saturday mornings if interested.

  • Duties: The field crew primarily handles daily harvests, but you'll be doing a little bit of everything: planting, weeding, handling produce post-harvest, mowing, and occasionally assisting customers, among other jobs.

  • Skills required: Working in the field requires a high level of physical fitness. Crew members must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds at a time repeatedly throughout the day, and be able to work in all weather: hot sun, rain, and cold fall mornings. Harvests will require periods of standing, kneeling, or bending for several hours at a time. Crew members should find satisfaction in physical, productive, outdoor work-with-your-hands jobs. Positive attitudes, arriving on time every day to your shift, and efficient use of time in a fast paced environment are absolute musts. Crew members must adhere to strict sanitation guidelines. Reliable transportation is required. Previous vegetable farm (not home gardening) experience is preferred but not required. Ability to operate tractors and small machinery is also preferred but not required.

  • Pay: $10.50/hr with the potential for more if the crew member consistently displays exceptional performance. All staff members will have access to produce to take home every week.

Farm Store Manager

*Closed for 2020*

TO APPLY:
Contact Dusty with a letter of interest and your resume at dusty@spurgeonveggies.com.

  • Schedule: 20-30 hours/week. Late May/Early June through mid to late October. Mondays 10 am to 1 pm (flexible), Tuesday and Wednesday 8:30 am to 1 pm, Thursdays 8:30 am to 5 pm. Some schedule flexibility available (may work Fridays in place of Tuesdays or Wednesdays; changeable from week to week). Must work every Monday and Thursday. Manager applicants may also be considered for farmers' market work on Saturday mornings if interested.

  • Duties: The store manager must maintain and operate the farm stand and assist with CSA management. On Mondays when the stand is closed, the manager will thoroughly clean the shelves and floors, and sort through and disinfect all produce containers in preparation of opening for the week. During the week, the manger will open the stand daily and keep it stocked and cleaned while helping customers. On CSA day (every Thursday) the manager will need to assist the owners with boxing CSA shares and helping flex share members get their produce for the week through closing time. During down time, jobs such as making social media posts, washing produce, sanitizing harvest equipment, and light weeding/maintenance of the herb gardens will be assigned.

  • Skills required: A friendly, personable attitude is a must. The manager will be interacting with customers throughout the day and must be able to answer questions and upsell produce in an engaging, cheerful, and professional manner. This position will require you to be on your feet during your shift, doing light to moderate physical work such as lifting and carrying produce bins for short distances, light gardening, sweeping and dusting, etc. The manager will be expected to follow strict sanitation guidelines and maintain a clean, organized space in the store, cooler, and storage areas. You must be able to focus and work efficiently and independently, and maintain a clear, open line of communication with the owners throughout the day. Timeliness and reliability are a must -- come to work when you are scheduled, and come on time. Computer proficiency (able to use a phone or tablet and point of sale software) required. Retail experience preferred. Reliable transportation to the farm is required. Position may be combined with Saturday morning farmers' markets if interested.

  • Pay: $11/hr with the potential for more if the manager goes above and beyond expected performance.  All staff members will have access to produce to take home every week.

  • Schedule: Every Saturday morning from June 6th through October 24th. Galesburg Farmers' Market: 7 am to 1 pm. Davenport Freight House Market: 5:30 am to 2:30 pm.

  • Skills required: Market assistants will be expected to actively engage with customers in a friendly, professional manner throughout the morning by answering questions, upselling, and representing the values of Spurgeon Veggies to the public. You must be able to multitask: markets can get quite busy at times, requiring all the workers to be helping customers and keeping the tables well-stocked and attractive at the same time.
